It was \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003edesigned as a missile carrying all-weather interceptor against Soviet bombers and served in this \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003erole from the 1960s until the 1980s. The F-106A as well as the F-106B two-seat trainer served \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003ewith 15 fighter interceptor squadrons starting in 1959. The aircraft was rarely referred to as the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eDelta Dart but was commonly called the “6”.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cbr\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn October 1960 Convair completed the 332nd F-106, 59-0141. In February 1961 the aircraft was \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eassigned to the 456th FIS Castle AFB, California. On April 24, 1963 59-0141 transferred to the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e498th FIS\/325th FW at McChord AFB, Washington and three years later it transferred to the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e318th FIS\/325th FW. Except for a short assignment with the 48th FIS the aircraft was with the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e318th FIS until November 1983 when it was sent to Davis-Monthan for storage and eventual \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003econversion to a QF-106 drone.
