On August 7, 1943 McClurg joined VMF-214 and served two tours with VMF-214 scoring seven victories between September 16, 1943 - December 28,1943. In September 1943 Greg Boyington took command of VMF-214. On December 26, 1943 Major Boyington shot down four Zeros over Rabaul.
